The Singapore Government is trying to review different varieties of development plans for the future of Pulau Ubin. Several stakeholders will be involved in the development to help in land use planning, market the island after the redevelopment is complete, promote green lifestyle, nature conservation and to understand what is expected on the island to attract both visitor s and tourists. The issues faced by the team were land constraints where careful planning of the land have to be sorted out for efficient use. Sustainability issues such as achieving a balance between urban development and nature conservation was faced and had proved to be a challenge for the team when planning strategically.
The scope of this project were to identify the opportunities and challenges for future efficient use of the Pulau Ubin, to decide whether to go for complete urbanization or nature conservation and to consider the short-term economic benefits with long-term sustainability of urban development. Additional research was done to understand the environment of the island by using a SWOT analysis. A survey was conducted to find out the expectations of Pulau Ubin together with statistical data of visitor arrivals and online articles and websites related to the island. An on-site observation was done by the team and we noticed that nature conservation on the island was low as there were lots of trash lying around due to the fact of lack of rubbish bins. There were lack of water points which lead to more usage of plastic bottles which increases the rubbish load. There were no first aid stations for emergency purposes and the rest stops were not well equipped.
In conclusion, we feel that it is appropriate that there should be nature conservation with a slow progress of urbanization to allow the residents to have time to adapt to the new environment.
