The development of Pulau Ubin has been a highly contested issue over the recent year. Relevant authorities have been exploring the options of either conserving island, urban development or a hybrid model.
With the use of both quantitative and quality research, this research proposes a hybrid development plan to promote tourism sustainability of Pulau Ubin. As one of the remaining few natural environments in Singapore, Pulau Ubin holds great potential as a heritage tourism site for the city. The island possesses an unique rustic charm that appeals to tourists who are nature lovers. A survey to find out common activities engaged while visiting the island as well as desired development plan was conducted. A total of 149 individuals residing in Singapore, both Singaporeans and foreigners participated in the survey.
Results from our survey has also shown that primary motivation for visiting the island would be for activities such as nature walks and the challenging cycle trails. Research findings have also revealed that the top two desired development plan are to develop accommodation facilities as well as increase available dining options.
A proposed tourism strategy for Pulau Ubin has been recommended for the next ten years with two phases to implement the suggested changes. At the end of the ten years, Pulau Ubin will be developed into a distinct tourism destination that provides an authentic experience to every visitor.
